Sony of Canada, which became a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan-based Sony on April 1, has named Ted Kawai as president.
Kawai had been deputy president since 1993.
Also, a veteran company executive has been tapped as senior vice-president, consumer products division.
Junzo Sano, most recently with Sony’s Personal Video International Marketing Division in Tokyo, has been named to the post.
– Compaq Canada has appointed Steven Van Binsbergen as government and education marketing manager, effective immediately.
Van Binsbergen was previously product manager, portables.
Compaq is searching for a candidate to fill the vacant portables post.
– Compression Labs, a u.s.-based maker of video communications products, has named Greg Funk as country manager, Canada.
Funk, who will work out of the firm’s Markham, Ont. office, was previously in sales and marketing with TIE/Communications.

Hartdegan comes to the position – a newly created one – from Congress Canada, a Toronto-based event management company.
– Kerry Mitchell is the new publisher of Equinox magazine.
Mitchell joined the Telemedia Communications title from WHERE Magazines International, where she was vice-president, development.

John Leckie has joined the Vancouver office of Gowling Strathy & Henderson, where he will focus primarily on marketing, advertising and competition law issues.
Leckie, who was previously with Lang Michener Lawrence & Shaw, Vancouver, held media and account services positions with Baker Lovick Advertising (now bddo) and Simons Advertising (now Palmer Jarvis) before obtaining his law degree.
