BC’s New Democratic Party wasted little time going to market with an attack ad targeting new Premier Christy Clark that compares her to her predecessor Gordon Campbell.

The ad by Now Communications of Vancouver, titled Christy Crunch, launched Monday across the province and shows a couple eating “Christy Crunch” cereal.

“It tastes familiar,” says the woman. “They’ve definitely added artificial sweetener.”

The cereal “is loaded with HST and has zero health benefits,” says the man, reading the cereal box.

The two cereal boxes show pictures of Clark with “repackaged” next to an identical one with Campbell’s picture and “original.”

“Can something taste mean?” asks the woman as her partner reaches in and pulls out a BC Rail toy train. “It’s a train giveaway” he says referring to the ongoing BC Rail scandal.

The ad ends with the voiceover: “New package, same old product.”

Marie Della Mattia, president and CEO of Now Communications, said it’s the “right message at the right time.”

“We want people to hear the message of the ad which is clearly that the Liberals haven’t changed,” she said. “Once we get people’s attention then we can have that conversation and talk a bit more about some of the serious issues behind it.”

Clark became leader of the BC Liberal party in February. The NDP will select their new leader April 17.
