Bruce Philp, formerly the CEO of GWP Brand Engineering, has won the National Business Book Award for his examination of the advertising industry, shutting out former media baron Conrad Black.
Philp’s received the recognition for his book Consumer Republic: Using Brands to Get What You Want, Make Corporations Behave, and Maybe Even Save the World.’
The National Business Book Award focuses on non-fiction, business-related books published in Canada, handing out a prize of $20,000 to the winner each year.
Black’s memoir A Matter of Principle (McClelland & Stewart Ltd) is a critical account of the U.S. justice system from the context of Black’s experiences.
One other book was also nominated, Chris Turner’s The Leap: How to Survive and Thrive in the Sustainable Economy.
Past winners have included such controversial figures as conservative commentator Ezra Levant for the book Ethical Oil: The Case for Canada’s Oil Sands last year, and activist Naomi Klein for No Logo: Taking Aim at the Brand Bullies in 2001.
