A total of 86 Canadian ad agencies and design firms combined for more than 200 awards – including 28 gold, 88 silver and 88 bronze – at the 17th annual Summit Creative Awards for small and mid-size agencies, in Portland, Oregon last week.

The Halifax, NS agency Chester + Co. led all Canadian firms with eight awards – one gold, four silver and three bronze – for clients including Duke Pubs and Atlantic Canada telecommunications company EastLink, as well as self-promotional work. Its sole gold came in the Poster category for its “Australia Day” execution for Duke Pubs.

“The Summit award show attracted a [lot] of entries from around the world, so it’s gratifying to win awards for so many different – and diverse – clients,” said Chester Goluch, Chester + Co’s president and creative director.

Vancouver’s Porcaro Communications collected eight awards – including three golds – for clients including Kodak and Silver Wheaton Corp.

The Brand Factory and Tag Idea Revolution, based in Woodbridge and Thornhill, Ont. respectively, as well as Toronto’s OneMethod Digital + Design, collected six awards apiece.

The Brand Factory won gold in the Consumer Magazine Advertising category for an ad promoting chef Mark McEwan’s upscale grocery store McEwan, while Tag won gold in the Consumer Product/Service Television category for its TV spot “This is MY First Choice Haircutters” for client First Choice.

“To be recognized for our work locally and abroad is a true testament to the passion, dedication and sheer talent of our entire team,” said Tag president Matt Orlando in a release. “We’re ecstatic.”

OneMethod Digital + Design won three gold awards in the Self-Promotion Logo, Other Website and Consumer Service Website categories, the latter for Toronto restaurant Lucien, while Edmonton agency Mkm was a double gold winner in the Television Spot $50,000 to $75,000 and Not-for-profit Video categories.

Established in 1994, the Summit Creative Awards honour small and mid-sized agencies and other creative groups with annual billings of less than $30 million. Agencies from 22 countries participated in this year’s competition. For a complete list of winners, visit SummitAwards.com.
