CDW puts a CMO in the hospital to advertise IT

Real-time data helps an executive who can't seem to help himself

Marketing executives aren’t always the first to embrace new technologies, but when it comes to the personal use of a hoverboard, a recent spot by technology company CDW suggests reticence isn’t always a bad idea.

In “Crash By CMO. Orchestration By CDW,” an older-looking business leader grabs a self-balancing scooter from a younger underlying (who manages to bring around four cups of coffee while riding it), and suggests a carefree, “Hey, I can do this too!” cheerfulness before crashing over the side of a staircase.

The clip makes the point that even with patients demonstrating such stupidity, all will be well, thanks to health-care organizations that use CDW hardware and software to set up “point of care” systems that will presumably help the CMO once he’s back on his feet.

There’s no real context as to why a CMO was chosen as the fall guy here. However, given what has been described as the often fractious relationship between marketing and the IT department, maybe this is a bit of a reminder that technology can sometimes be a life-saver — and not just figuratively.
