A new salary guide suggests that data and digital skills will define the hottest jobs in 2013.

According to research from Robert Half Technology and The Creative Group, companies are seeking staff who can improve their web and social media presence, gather and analyse data and optimize consumers’ online experience.

“The growth around tech, social media and data analysis is super hot,” said Alicia Brum, branch manager of The Creative Group in Toronto. “It’s the highest in demand and the supply of qualified professionals is lower than the demand.”

According to the report, the positions that are likely to see strong demand in the coming year (and their average starting salaries) are:

• Network engineers ($79,500 – $104,250): Those who can effectively engineer the integration of cloud computing with other technologies and maintain a secure transfer of data to multiple locations are increasingly sought after, according to Robert Half.

• Mobile applications developers ($79,000 – $112,000): As companies aim to reach consumers on smartphones and tablets, they need professionals who can develop content for the smallest screen.

•. Business intelligence analysts ($76,000 – $105,750): There’s a high demand for employees who can help firms make critical business decisions by gathering and analysing data to better target marketing efforts.

• Web designers ($75,000 – $120,000): As always, firms need talented staff with front- and back-end development skills, an eye for design and expertise in maintaining interactive websites and social media pages.

• SEO/SEM specialists ($75,000 – $95,000): Those responsible for formalizing search engine optimization and marketing tactics will still be in high demand in 2013.

• User experience specialists ($65,000 – $115,000): Since so much customer interaction happens online, companies are looking for those who can create positive digital experiences.
