ESA highlights electrical dangers of decking the halls

Video offers safety tips for buying and installing holiday decorations

Electrical Safety Authority is urging Ontarians to put safety at the top of their list this holiday season.

ESA has launched a new video that highlights electrical safety tips for the holidays, such as “ensure holiday decorations have a recognized certification mark” and “purchase decorations from a reputable retailer to avoid counterfeit products that may not be safety tested.” ESA also created a downloadable holiday décor shopping list and installation guide that can be accessed on its website.

“We did some research in the summer that showed most Ontarians don’t really think about electrical safety and they don’t recognize electrical hazards,” said Kathryn Chopp, general manager, communications and stakeholder relations at Electrical Safety Authority.

“[As] people are purchasing either new products or pulling out old electrical products, we see this as a time of year when electrical incidents can happen, such as fires or shocks. We want to make sure people are aware of the electrical hazards and know what to do to avoid them.”

The video is housed on YouTube and ESA’s website, and the organization is promoting it heavily through its social media channels. In Ontario, ESA works with 70 local utilities companies, which are also promoting and sharing the video.

ESA worked with Argyle Communications on the campaign.
