Day three of the 58th International Festival of Creativity (nee Advertising) began with a Cannes Lions beach soccer tournament kicking off in the bright morning sun just outside the Palais. Inside, Martha Stewart and Soledad O’Brien took to the stage to talk about gender balance in creative roles. And the shortlists for the Cyber and Design competitions were released. Canada showed up seven times on the first and eight times on the second.
Antoine Bécotte, Cossette chief creative officer and judge on the Design jury, told Marketing Tuesday: “It is so freakin’ tough to get shortlists.” And so his colleagues back in Canada should feel pretty good this morning. Cossette appeared on the Design shortlist four times between the media and advertising divisions.
Overall, Canada’s performance in Design should also be considered an accomplishment. On a list that is only 146 entries long, from 1,774 total submissions, Canada made eight appearances (better than 5%). Canada had 50 entries in total, less than 3%.
Only launched in 2008 (when it was still called the International Festival of Advertising), the Design Lions award “the creative use of design as a lever to influence consumers and its use as an aid to the communication of brand and product messages.”
Canada is represented on the Design jury by Helene Godin, creative director at Sid Lee.
Canadian agencies accounted for 108 entries in the Cyber competition, up from 96 in 2010. Viral Video was Canada’s strongest category with four online films in the running for a Lion. Cloudraker‘s vice-president and creative director Christina Brown is on the jury from Canada.
