John Clinton, Tom Eymundson named Cannes jury presidents

Leaders from Edelman and Pirate Group to lead PR and Radio juries in June

Two Canadians have been chosen as jury presidents for the 2016 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. Edelman’s John Clinton and Pirate Group’s Tom Eymundson will lead the PR and Radio juries, respectively.

Clinton, chair of Edelman Canada and the North American head of creative and content, has had a long career in Canadian marketing and communications. He’s led creative agencies such as JWT and Grey, and media companies such as Transcontinental, before joining Edelman Canada in 2011 as its CEO.

Pirate Group CEO and co-founder Eymundson, meanwhile, has been judging radio competitions with relative frequency over the past few years, serving on radio juries for the London International Awards and Cannes Lions in 2014.

Each will steer a mid-sized jury (historically, Radio Lions nominees are judged by 15-20 people while PR’s jury sits at around 25 members) in June, when more than 400 jurors will arrive in Cannes to judge the 23 separate competitions that now make up the festival.

“It’s not easy to win a Lion,” said Philip Thomas, CEO of Lions Festivals, in a release. “On average our juries will award just 3% of more than 40,000 entries. They’re looking for unique work that is creatively exceptional and challenges the norm. What we look for in our presidents is people that have been in this 3% time and time again – it’s a significant responsibility leading a Cannes Lions jury and we’re incredibly proud to have such a powerful mix of individuals who know what creative excellence looks like, because they have it in abundance themselves.”
