The Institute of Communication Agencies (ICA) has named Laurie Young, managing director of Ogilvy & Mather Toronto, as chair of its 2012 board of directors.

“It is an honour to be elected to this role at such a pivotal time in our industry’s evolution. It would be an understatement to say that embracing change, invention and reinvention is vital to marketing success,” said Young in a statement.

“We’ve expanded the mission of the ICA to ensure we’re in the best position to promote all that our industry does. The ICA’s new mission is about looking forward and acknowledging the breadth of our industry’s activities. As an example: “to champion commercial creativity” has replaced “to enhance the role of communications industry” — to me that signals momentum and opportunity,” Young said.

Young, the first female chair in 15 years, takes over for Claude Carrier, partner at BOS, who remains on the board of directors and now chairs the ICA’s board of governors.

Young sat as vice-chair and treasurer for the board in 2011.

In addition to Young and Carrier, the 2012 board includes:

• Al Scornaienchi, Agency 59
• Andrew Bergstrom, Cossette
• Andrew Bruce, Publicis – Toronto
• Arthur Fleischmann, John St.
• Bob Shropshire, Dentsu Canada
• David Gibb, JWT Canada
• Doug Turney, MacLaren McCann
• Jim Kabrajee, Marshall Fenn Advertising
• Gillian Graham, ICA
• Jani Yates, ICA
