Marketing Awards co-chairs Christina Brown and Shawn King finalized their jury this week for the 89th Marketing Awards, with 14 agency creatives taking part from across Canada and the U.S.

The Marketing Awards call for entries went out Monday, with a deadline of March 4. Judging is booked for April 14 and 15 in Toronto. New this year will be a preliminary round of online judging. To facilitate that, all work must be uploaded at the awards entry site, rather than presented on boards as in previous years.

“Our goal for the jury this year was pretty clear,” said King, vice-president and CCO, Extreme Group. “It started with great creative thinkers, obviously, but we also wanted good people, slightly fewer than in recent years—people from across the country, international representation and a 50-50, male/female split. We did it and I know we both feel pretty good about that.”

“I am very proud that we put together such a fantastic jury and that women are equally represented in it,” added Brown, vice-president creative, Cloudraker. “When one considers the incredible purchasing power women have in Canada it only makes sense that we be well represented in the country’s creative leadership. I hope young women and men who look at the Marketing Awards book see that female creative leadership is a vital and growing part of our industry.”

Helen Pak, co-executive creative director, Saatchi & Saatchi (Toronto)

Lara Palmer, creative director, freelance (Vancouver)

Dave Roberts, creative director, Sid Lee (Toronto)

Andrew Simon, chief creative officer, Blammo (Toronto)

Tom Van Daele, founder, Unknown Lab (Los Angeles)

Christina Yu, executive creative director, Red Urban (Toronto)

Roxana Zegan, creative director, Digital Kitchen (New York)

While Brown and King don’t vote (except to break ties), they do provide direction and guidance on voting procedure and what to consider when it comes time to pick gold, silver and bronze.

“We’ll be expecting our jury to judge and award the work using some emotion, not ego,” said King. “What work makes them feel something? What work are they reacting to as people? This won’t be about the loudest voice in the room.”
