Maverick hires Rick Byun

Seasoned PR pro will focus on new business growth in newly created role

Toronto-based communications firm Maverick has hired Rick Byun in the newly created role of vice-president, strategy and business development. Byun will be responsible for new client acquisition, as well as developing strategies for current clients.

“We didn’t have a formal new business strategy because most of our business — I would say 90% — is referral,” said Julie Rusciolelli, president of Maverick. “However, there’s that 10% of business that really needs attention and that’s where Rick is really going to be valuable.”

Prior to joining Maverick, Byun did a short stint as a VP at High Road, and before that spent more than two years at Veritas, where he was director of corporate and public affairs and director of growth and partnerships. He also held communications and advisor roles within the Ontario government.

Rusciolelli said Byun has a lot of experience in a variety of sectors, including financial services, automotive and CPG, “but first and foremost I hire for fit… We knew he had sector experience in spades, but it was really a nice fit.”
