McDonald’s Canada is unleashing a McFlurry of marketing activity commemorating a milestone anniversary for its signature frozen dessert.
First introduced in the small coastal town of Bathurst, New Brunswick in 1995, the McFlurry is now a global phenomenon, available in approximately 100 countries and boasting regional variations including the Durian Crunch McFlurry (Singapore), the Bubblegum Squash McFlurry (Australia and New Zealand) and the Baci McFlurry (Italy)
McDonald’s Canada is celebrating the frozen treat’s 20th anniversary with a new commercial from Cossette Toronto called “McFlurry: Born in Canada. Loved around the world.”
The ad comes in both a 30 and a cut-down 15-second version, and features a series of Instagram selfies of people from various countries eating a McFlurry. Accompanying the images is an original song featuring the lyrics “Born in Canada in 1995, made it’s way around the world and the love came alive/from China to India, France to Peru/Russia and Egypt and Mexico, too.”
As the ad progresses, the Instagram pictures are accompanied by an animated background representing a signature landmark from each featured country – including The Great Wall of China, Russia’s Red Square and the Sydney Opera House.
Cossette creative director David Daga said the creative approach stemmed from an Instagram search using the #McFlurry hashtag that generated more than 500,000 results.
“We always knew this was a very popular global product, but when we looked a little deeper, we realized the huge global affection for this product,” said Daga. “There are so many posts for the McFlurry happening daily. It was an idea that presented itself to us.”
McDonald’s is also commemorating the McFlurry’s anniversary with a new flavour: Red velvet with Oreo.
The company is also introducing a McFlurry truck, developed in partnership with Tribal DDB, which will be present at various cultural events across the country.
