SpaceWays solves space problems with contest

Storage company asks for pictures of cramped condos, apartments or offices

SpaceWays wants to know how Torontonians are stashing their stuff.

The on-demand storage service launched a Twitter contest inviting Torontonians to share photos of their cramped condos, apartments or offices for the chance to win three months of free storage. People can tag @SpaceWaysCanada and the hashtag #SaveMySpaceTO. A winner will be announced each week until Jan. 30.

SpaceWays, which operates in Toronto, Chicago, London and Paris, gives customers storage boxes, which are then picked up by staff and stored in a warehouse. Everything is coordinated online, including the return of items: customers don’t have access to the storage facilities.

“The contest combines two things that make us special, one being a solution to a problem that everybody knows: a lack of space,” said Rob Rebholz, co-founder of Berlin-based SpaceWays. “The second is we’re a tech company as opposed to a traditional self-storage company and a lot of our users are tech-driven as well. They use Twitter and Facebook… and it’s a great way to engage people.”

A similar contest launched in London, U.K., which Rebholz said was very successful. “We expect some fun pictures of how people solve the problem of not having enough space,” he said.

Public relations for SpaceWays Canada is handled by Toronto-based Rock-it Promotions.
