Scanning back through the headlines, Marketing‘s editors and writers have selected the articles they felt defined Canada’s marketing industry in 2011. These stories showed an industry in flux as people and businesses tried to keep up with consumers’ ever-changing habits though media innovation, massive agency upheaval and a whirlwind of hirings and firings.
Names and Faces
It’s hard to believe how much senior talent – among both agencies and clients – changed jobs or took promotions in 2011. From Lauren Richards’ unexpected departure from Media Experts to Geoff Craig’s appearance at Extreme Toronto, LinkedIn must have been scorched by the friction of constant updates and gossip-stalking lurkers. Geoffrey Roche, Lorraine Hughes, Nancy Vonk and Janet Kestin left the agencies they helped build to pursue other interests, while Canadian talents like Andrew Bailey stepped into larger international roles. And of course Steve Jobs, revered by the industry worldwide as an innovator and visionary, passed away in October from pancreatic cancer.
