The Juggernaut’s gift to ‘horrible ad people’

Toronto agency swaps cliché Christmas swag for cheeky promo

Forget the t-shirts and beach towels. For this year’s corporate holiday gift, The Juggernaut created Advertising Against Humanity — a hilarious Cards Against Humanity expansion pack for “horrible ad people.”

A description on the box says the cards are as “despicable and offensive as the advertising itself” and take cheeky, sarcastic jabs at the advertising industry, like “Our new agency motto: Adapting that piece of sh*t global campaign.” The cards were written by Lyranda Martin-Evans and Travis Cowdy, who work at KBS+P Toronto and freelanced on the project.

“I’ve done the t-shirts, I’ve done beach towels and I didn’t want to do the cliché thing any more,” said Patrick Fay, executive producer and co-founder at The Juggernaut, a Toronto-based animation, design and visual effects studio. “Everyone sends a bottle of wine or box of chocolates and it gets lost in the mix every holiday season, so we wanted a bit of a punch in the face.”

The company sent the cards to around 500 writers, art directors and creative directors this week. After the gag gift received some press, The Juggernaut was inundated with requests, so Fay has ordered another 500 sets.

“I was really nervous about doing the cards at first because [Martin-Evans] was pushing the envelope — some of them are really risqué. But we ended up printing them and here we find ourselves slammed,” said Fay.

While most companies send out client gifts as a gesture of goodwill, The Juggernaut’s gift was created “for the sole purpose of winning awards,” as it states on the packaging. And “yep, this is really one giant ad.”

Toronto-based Glossy Inc. is handling PR, trading its services for two packs of cards.
