The Honda Indy Toronto has hired Torchia Communications to manage a media relations campaign in support of the annual street course event this summer.

The Toronto-based PR firm will organize and implement press conferences, media tours, onsite press logistics and editorial services around the race, which returns to Exhibition Place July 16-18.

Torchia presented its capabilities as well as a recommended media schedule and onsite management plan during April’s review, said Daniel Torchia, the firm’s managing director. The agency was handed the project two weeks ago.

The firm marks its 10-year anniversary this July, so this project win is a nice way to celebrate, he said. “It’s a high-profile assignment and it’s for an agency that’s usually below the radar,” said Torchia.

“We are confident that Torchia Communications will take our PR program to a new level and know they will represent us well with media, sponsors, series representatives and other partners,” said Charlie Johnstone, vice-president and general manager of Honda Indy Toronto, in a release.

In 2008, Honda Canada signed a multi-year agreement for title sponsorship rights to Toronto’s IndyCar race.

Molson had sponsored the event for 20 years but dropped some of its title sponsorship in 2006, and got out of the race entirely in 2007. A merger of the Champ Car and the Indy Racing League in early 2008 led to the cancellation of the Toronto race that year.

Paul Tracy, Helio Castroneves, Alex Tagliani, Danica Patrick and Simona De Silvestro are expected to participate in this year’s race.
