As of late last week, Cossette was leading the pack for the “Make art Pop” campaign for Mentos, Best of Show winner in 2008, followed by “The Rant” from Molson and Bensimon Byrne (Bensimon Byrne D’Arcy, at the time).
That spot not only won Best of Show at the 2001 Marketing Awards but also crossed over into popular culture to become a phenomenon like few ads had before or since. How often did someone quote their favourite line at you–”I pronounce it ‘about’ not ‘aboot’.” And Joe, the heroically proud everyman Canadian star of the spot, became a national hero of sorts.
The year after that, Panasonic and Palmer Jarvis DDB‘s Toronto office earned the title for the TV spot “Recital” which showed how a skipping portable CD player (remember those?) can undermine a young music student’s lessons.
“This was a classic case of solving the problem by working backwards and mining a product insight,” said Andrew Simon, executive creative director of DDB Toronto today, but a senior writer at the time. “When you’re looking to tap into physical and emotional trauma, look no further than a school bus.”
The win was also a very big deal for the Toronto office, said Simon. “While our Vancouver brethren were consistently creating outstanding work, this pushed our office forward and set the stage for great success in the years to come.”
Both very worthy Best of Show winners, but good enough to be named Best of Decade? That’s for you to decide.
