Vice Media’s Shane Smith on the secret of his success:

“We get paid by everybody now. One thing we saw coming was that everyone was investing in platforms, platforms, platforms – be it mobile phones, 4G, Mac Books. We were like ‘you have to fill it with something and exclusivity is going to be your big differentiator’ because those things are all commodities and will be worth 99 bucks soon. The reason you pay three grand for Apple vs. a $99 Acer is because of all the shit you can put in there. That’s going to be the same way with every smartphone and computer out there. If you can build up audiences and say I’ve got 50 million people on Vice.com with Google and you want to move that audience onto a tablet, phone or hologram, that’s worth something because you’re saying I’m moving all that audience to you. And all the ad dollars and all the fucking lift and all that.”
