Blockbuster Canada is slashing the cost of renting its new releases.

New releases from the movie rental company will now cost $3.99 for two nights, a price drop of nearly 30%.

Barry Guest, general manager of Blockbuster Canada, said the company wants to help Canadians stretch their dollars in this tight economy.

But the move also comes as the Dallas-based Blockbuster Inc. grapples with its own financial woes.

The company is fending off stiff competition from online rivals, low-cost vending machines and DVD-by-mail companies.

Blockbuster said customers can also keep a new release for seven nights for $5.99.
