Burger King restaurants across Canada are getting ready for Free Fries Friday, the marketing initiative to celebrate the chain’s new, crispier, thicker cut fries on Jan. 27.

Participating locations are offering free small-size samples of their all-new fries to guests all day long. With this latest effort to drive sales, Burger King views the new fries as a compliment to its popular Whopper sandwich.

“Our claim to fame is ‘Home of the Whopper’ and we’d like to become ‘Home of the best fries’,” said Lucy Todish, director of marketing for Burger King Restaurants of Canada.

Burger King’s agency of record, Taxi 2, launched 15-second English and French TV spots late last week to publicize Free Fries Friday. The ads run in conjunction with an ongoing national campaign and air on the Global network and specialty TV channels.

Other promotion includes in-store materials and an e-mail blast to Burger King’s database of roughly 20,000 customers and online ads. Student Price Card–which often partners with the quick serve restaurant–is also promoting the fry giveaway via Twitter and Facebook accounts.

“This is a really big deal for us. It gives us another opportunity to talk about our fries. We’ve built a pretty big platform with our poutine and there’s nothing better than a poutine with our new fries,” stated Todish.

On Feb. 6, Burger King will be launching a new national marketing campaign focusing on its Mushroom and Swiss Steak House XT, with a mix of TV, radio and digital communications.
