The home of the Calgary Flames may need a new sponsor by next year, according to a story in today’s Globe and Mail.

Pengrowth Management, which has sponsored the Pengrowth Saddledome since 2000, is considering giving up naming rights now that long-time CEO Jim Kinnear has reduced his role with the company, according to the Globe.

Kinnear told the newspaper decision on the naming rights remains a “work in progress.”

“We had the naming rights there for 10 years. It’s up for renewal June 30. And we’re just considering options,” he said.

The cost to Pengrowth for the naming rights has never been made public, but the Globe points out the deal was signed one year after Air Canada signed a 20-year, $40-million deal to sponsor the Toronto Maple Leaf’s home rink, the Air Canada Centre.

Flames president Ken King declined to comment.
