Canada is seeking advice from Australia as it prepares a new branding campaign.

Finance minister Jim Flaherty met Wednesday with the team behind the “Australian Made” campaign, a longstanding initiative that touts the quality of products made in Australia.

In Brisbane for a G20 meeting, Flaherty used his trip to Australia to learn about the country’s success in branding Australian products as high quality as the Canadian government prepares its own campaign.

“Our government is committed to fostering trade and Canadian entrepreneurship. A ‘Made in Canada’ brand will help advance both of these goals by raising awareness – both in Canada and internationally – of high-quality Canadian products,” Flaherty said in a release. “Learning directly from the Australians about their successful branding initiative is a first step in the process.”

Australia’s campaign has been around for more than 25 years. About 1,700 companies are currently using the branding and the Australian Made logo appears on more than 10,000 products.

Like the Australian initiative, Canada’s branding campaign will aim to raise consumer awareness of Canadian made products both domestically and abroad.

The government believes branding products as “Made in Canada” is could be a powerful tool in swaying consumers. Though it’s a popular tactic in other countries, Canada does not have an official Canadian-made campaign.
