The CBC has launched Canada’s Hockey Anthem Challenge, a national contest to find a new song for its weekly hockey broadcast.
The network is currently without a song after Dolores Claman, the theme’s composer, sold the jingle’s rights to CTV last week for a reported seven figures. The song will now be heard before NHL games airing on CTV-owned TSN.
Canadians have until August 31 to submit their entry online, which will be available for public review and rating. At least five semifinalists will present their songs to a panel of musicians and network representatives during a prime time special on October 4.
Two finalists will be selected and revealed during a Hockey Night doubleheader on October 9. Canadians can then vote online for their favourite. The winner will be announced October 11, the official start of Hockey Night’s 2008-09 season.
“Between now and October, we invite musicians to create, and everyone in the country to help us select, the perfect new music to represent the most famous hockey broadcast in the world,” stated Scott Moore, executive director of CBC Sports, in a release. “With Canada’s Hockey Anthem Challenge, we will create a new theme for the Hockey Nation, something that will tell the world what CBC’s Hockey Night In Canada is all about.”
The winning entry will receive $100,000. The songwriters will receive half of the performance royalties, with the other half going to Canadian minor league hockey.
