A Chinese city government website says local trade officials have found five fake Apple stores in a southwestern city.
The Kunming government website says authorities in the city in Yunnan province took action against two of the stores, which were found to be operating without a business license.
It says officials couldn’t do anything about the other three stores because they did not find any fake Apple products for sale.
The investigation follows a blog post last week by an American woman who lives in Kunming, who stumbled across three shops masquerading as bona fide Apple stores. Further investigation by her readers turned up two more stores.
Calls to the Kunming Trade and Industry Bureau rang unanswered Monday.
The fake stores underline the slow progress that China is making in countering piracy.
