A week after adding new capabilities and expanded services on its website, Cineplex is launching a mobile app.

The Cineplex Mobile App will be available as a free download on iPhones and BlackBerries starting Wednesday, and Android devices on Dec. 1. The app will allow users to buy tickets, read movie news, view trailers and receive information on promotions.

Cineplex already has a mobile website that offers show times and ticket purchase, and the app is not replacing that site, said company spokesperson Kyle Moffat.

“It’s a nice complement,” said Moffat. “There are people that are very loyal to their apps and exclusively use apps to get the info they need. There’s also those who like to use the mobile web, so we wanted to satisfy both needs.”

One difference between the two is the app will feature a PayPal payment option. It will also give users access to their Scene point balance–the brand’s loyalty program. Members of the Scene rewards program can store their Scene card number on their phone to earn points towards movie tickets or concessions.

Once integrated onto a user’s phone, an electronic Scene bar code replaces the physical loyalty card and can be used at the Cineplex box office or concession area.

The marketing push behind the mobile app includes on-screen promotions in theatres as well as a print, radio, outdoor and online media buy.
