Energizer Canada Inc. is giving minor league hockey players across the country the chance to score an on-ice visit from Washington Capitals superstar Alexander Ovechkin through its “Power of 8” contest campaign.

Starting Oct. 1 parents, hockey coaches, and kids (with parental consent) are invited to fill out an electronic entry form at Energizer.ca. A winner will be selected by random draw.

Ovechkin will lead the winner’s hockey practice and present the team with $8,000 to help pay for the team’s expenses, such as ice time, equipment and jerseys.

“I can’t wait to get on the ice with these kids and show them some tricks,” said Ovechkin, in a release. “I remember how great it was to skate with some of my heroes when I was a kid, and I look forward to the opportunity to show them that their hockey dreams can come true.”

Last April. Energizer, the official battery of the NHL, signed Ovechkin to a sponsorship agreement that runs until the end of 2010.

The “Power of 8” was inspired by Energizer’s lithium battery, which is eight times longer lasting than the company’s alkaline product, said Kent Hatton, brand group director of Energizer Canada Inc. Eight also happens to be Ovechkin’s number.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Alex because much like Energizer’s Ultimate Lithium batteries, he is an exceptional source of high energy, high power and overall high performance,” said Hatton. Energizer has leveraged the theme at retail level, offering consumers up to $8 off selected purchases of Energizer’s Performance line of batteries.

Energizer is supporting the contest through in-store materials featuring Ovechkin from Commix Communications.

Both Energizer and the NHL will support the contest through database e-mails.
