Shoppers Drug Mart has the Optimum card. Cineplex Entertainment and Scotiabank have the Scene rewards program. Now, HMV is adding a customer rewards program.

Purehmv, a new rewards program launched Monday, will allow members to redeem points earned on future HMV purchases at stores and online. HMV hasn’t had a loyalty program since it discontinued its “Buy 10 get one free” program in 1999.

“The introduction of purehmv is part of our continued commitment to being the premier entertainment destination for Canadians,” said HMV Canada president Humphrey Kadaner, in a release.

For every penny spent in HMV stores or online, members earn one point. Customers can purchase the rewards card for $3 at retail locations, but 1,000 bonus points are up for grabs for customers who register online at www.PureHMV.ca.

“The primary and unique selling proposition of purehmv is the cool stuff that money can’t buy, where customers can exchange their points for one of a kind items,” explained Ben Sadeh, manager of customer rewards for HMV.

Among the exclusive rewards available for members include autographed fare from Stephen King, Justin Bieber and the Montreal Canadiens, a 10″ vinyl by Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, as well as contest entries to special events, such as meeting celebrity blogger Perez Hilton or catching the premiere of the much-anticipated Leonardo DiCaprio thriller Inception. There are close to 150 rewards items available currently, with dozens more to be added this summer.

The program was launched in the United Kingdom in May 2009, and has over 1.1 million members. Sadeh said that HMV Canada has similar membership targets for the new program.

As music shopping has become an increasingly digital exercise, HMV has worked to reinvent itself including redesigned stores with expanded technology and book categories, the recent launch of HMVDigital.ca (which is 100% DRM-free) and will introduce apparel and fashion accessories this summer.
