Studentawards, an online company that helps students find funding for education, and MuchMusic have launched a joint campaign to promote the music station’s five $1,000 scholarships for Canadian youth.

An advertising campaign launched last week with a television spot and online banner ads developed in-house by MuchMusic. The spot features brightly-coloured animation and a voiceover explaining that “all you need to qualify is a love of music.” The commercial ends with a prompt to visit the contest website for details.

Suzanne Tyson, president of Studentawards, said her organization and MuchMusic are also using their respective websites, Facebook pages and Twitter accounts to spread the message.

Much and Studentawards “talk to a lot of the same youth, starting from about the same age, so we know there’s crossover with the members that we have at Studentawards and the viewers they have on all the Much properties,” said Tyson.

“Much recognized that students needed to find a way to pay for their higher education, and by putting out a cash scholarship instead of an internship, they were recognizing that need for money. And for us, because we’re entirely an online company, it gives us exposure on TV that we wouldn’t normally have.”

To compete for a MuchMusic scholarship, Canadian students aged 15-24 (and not residing in Quebec) must submit two short essays to Studentawards.com – one outlining their ideas to improve MuchMusic, and one explaining what they’d choose as a personal theme song and why.

A Studentawards panel will narrow the field down to about 10% of applicants, with MuchMusic selecting the five scholarship winners from that shortlist.

Tyson said more than 1,000 students had submitted entries since the campaign began last week.
