The International Freedom of Expression Exchange has teamed up with Toronto agency Juniper Park for a 23-day campaign that tells the story of the unsolved murders of journalists around the world and provides easy-to-use digital tools to bring about action.

The “International Day to End Impunity” campaign launched. Nov. 1 and culminates on Nov. 23, a date that marks the 2009 massacre of journalists in the Philippines, said Catherine Demajo, Juniper’s group account director.

An illustration of a gun pointing at a pencil on a dramatic red background appears on Twitter, Facebook, digital banners, print posters and on the website which also has a poster contest to encourage users to submit their own design, become engaged and ultimately get involved, said Demajo.

“That visual of the gun with the pencil is the foundation of the program,” said Demajo. “IFEX is an organization that’s about the right to be able to speak out about injustices without fear.”

Juniper Park designed the visuals, which include 23 unique posters in five languages with names to represent each day of the campaign and a journalist, or in some cases, groups of journalists who were murdered, and whose crime remains unsolved.

The agency also worked with IFEX to build a digital calendar at DayToEndImpunity.org that tells the story of an unsolved murder every day of the campaign with a link to an e-letter that readers can send to local authorities demanding an investigation into the death.
