Now Canadian shoppers will be holding something other than a dog-eared copy of the IKEA catalogue as they stroll the aisles of the home furnishings retailer – their smartphone.

Thanks to a mobile shopping application slated to launch on Wednesday, IKEA Canada says customers can use their mobile phone to make their in-store experience smoother.

The new app is complementary to the existing catalogue app and IKEA’s now mobile-friendly website. The IKEA Mobile Shopping Application will allow shoppers to obtain product information, stock availability and view store maps. They’ll also be able to look through IKEA’s product offerings and compile shopping lists.

Referencing the increasing reliance IKEA customers have on their smartphones to get information they need, IKEA Canada president Kerri Molinaro said in a release that 10% of all traffic to IKEA.com in March 2012 was from a mobile device. That translates into an annual increase of 250%, she added.

IKEA Canada is one of only three pilot countries that will offer the new app. It will be available on iPhones and Androids, and in English and French.

There are 11 IKEA Canada stores.
