Home renovation retailer Lowe’s Canada has developed an augmented reality smartphone app meant to enhance consumer engagement with its flyers.

Augmented reality apps use video cameras on mobile devices to display digital information over real-world images.

Lowe’s app, developed in partnership with Windsor, Ont.-based developer Red Piston, works on three LG appliance listings in its latest flyer. By scanning the listings, users can see 3D animations of a washer, dryer and refrigerator with working doors and knobs to demonstrate product attributes, as well as additional product information.

The pilot project was several months in development, and is meant to test consumers’ receptivity to the concept, said Sonny Kekelj, director of digital marketing for Lowe’s Canada. If enough people use and like the app, Lowe’s is considering adding new functionality to subsequent versions.

“Technology is really changing how consumers shop,” Kekelj said. “Their expectations are changing. We want to deliver an enhanced customer experience that’s engaging, relevant and persuasive.”
