Dan MacKenzie, vice-president and general manager of NBA Canada, has been named the new chair of the Sponsorship Marketing Council of Canada (SMCC).

MacKenzie takes over for Monique Giroux, VP of CIBC sponsorship marketing, who has served in the role for three years. Giroux remains on the 16-member board.

Prior to his role at NBA Canada, MacKenzie was director of marketing for sports broadcaster TSN.

“There are more opportunities than ever for sponsors to engage consumers, whether through traditional means or constantly changing digital and social media channels,” said MacKenzie, in a statement Thursday. “I am honored to have been chosen to lead such an esteemed board of professionals and to work with them to advance the SMCC’s mandate in the areas of education, networking and celebrating excellence in Canada.”

The SMCC operates as part of the Association of Canadian Advertisers, and was formed to develop best practices in sponsorship marketing.
