The festival’s over, folks. Time to get back to reality (and your local time zone). While eyes were intently focused on Cannes for the last couple of weeks, this edition of Marketing Bits is decidedly France-free for those who may have missed some recent Canadian happenings.
MuchMusic scored the most-watched broadcast in its history with the recent 2011 MuchMusic Video Awards. More than one million viewers (1.009 million, to be exact) watched from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday, June 19. (That’s up 10.4% compared to last year’s ratings, and up 67% in the 18 to 34 demo.) And more than 375,000 unique visitors went to MuchMusic.com on June 19—the biggest single-day audience ever on the site. Not bad for a semi-school night…
Torstar Corporation recently launched WineFox.ca, a website for those interested in wine. The site contains reviews by wine experts, celebrity interviews, recipes, how-to videos and blogs. There’s also a social media component via Facebook and Twitter, and there’s a mobile and tablet app on the way.
NightLife.ca magazine, a free print monthly dedicated to Montreal’s urban culture that’s published by Newad, is changing from a 10-times-per-year publication to a quarterly run. The first quarterly issue will come out in the fall. After devoting resources to NightLife.ca’s web and mobile platforms with successful results—its NightLife Mtl iPhone app has been downloaded more than 10,000 times and the magazine has roughly 8,500 Twitter followers—it will further consolidate its resources towards these platforms.
Mitsubishi Electric retained Tag Idea Revolution as its AOR for 2011. Since 2006, tag has handled all of the electronics company’s trade and consumer advertising, promotions, contests, website development, tradeshow design and marketing collateral.
To kick off the first day of summer, Go RVing Canada launched an online contest that asks consumers to submit their best RV-related snap shots at GoRVing.ca. Go RVing is promoting the contest, which closes Aug. 29, through Facebook, Twitter, TV and radio. Members of Go RVing Canada’s PR team will select the winners, which will be announced September 2.
Crystal Light has found that Canadian women’s purses are their most essential fashion accessory thanks to an Angus Reid survey. To honour this purse passion, Crystal Light is asking people to vote for the Crystal Light Designer Purse Challenge Winner via Facebook. This new contest features purses made by fashion students; voters have the chance to win one of the finalists bags packed with $1000 worth of goodies. The tie-in to water (and, subsequently, Crystal Light) is that 55% of the survey respondents said it’s essential to carry a water bottle in their purse.
