Speculation and expectations are both running high now that HBC has decided to bring Saks to Canada. What does this mean to the company’s brand? It’s revenue potential? What does it mean for Canadian retail as a whole?

Senior writer and retail reporter Kristin Laird approached a number of industry experts to get their views on what the acquisition heralds. But Marketing then asked readers to weigh in as well. The largest group of voters agreed it was a good move on the retailer’s part in terms of establishing dominance ahead of Nordstrom’s invasion.

Is buying Saks the right move for HBC?
• It’s a sound defensive move against its competitors – 40%
• HBC should focus on improving its existing Hudson’s Bay and Lord & Taylor stores first – 25.2%
• Forget the brands. The real estate alone makes it worthwhile – 22.2%
• Saks’ best days are behind it. It’s a bad acquisition – 12.6%
