McDonald’s is launching its third two-week coffee giveaway March 1. Customers will get a small coffee free of charge, no purchase necessary, any time of day–free cups of coffee were only available in the morning during the first two promotions.
McDonald’s first launched the event last April, and brought it back due to popular demand, said Hope Bagozzi, the company’s director of national marketing.
"Each time we do this, more and more people are catching on and tasting our coffee and responding favourably to it," she said, adding that the March 1 start date capitalizes on the excitement following the Olympic Games.
During each promotion, McDonald’s notices a surge in coffee consumption that sustains itself well after the offer ends, which indicates "we’re actually enticing people to change their routine and add our coffee to their repertoire beyond the promotion," said Bagozzi.
Current customers are already well aware that McDonald’s serves great coffee, so the point of the campaign is to attract new business, she said.
The coffee event launches exactly one month after Tim Hortons introduced its new English muffin breakfast sandwich. Bagozzi said the promotion was planned well before the coffee chain launched its answer to the iconic McDonald’s McMuffins.
Billboards, TV, radio and out-of-home advertising from Cossette support the promotion. OMD Canada handled the media planning and buying.
