Montreal group launches sexual tolerance campaign

Montreal’s Fondation Émergence, an organization devoted to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, has launched a campaign promoting tolerance and greater awareness of its clientele among the city’s ethnic groups.

The launch of the “Pour l’acceptation de la diversité sexuelle” program coincides with the last day of the 12th annual “Semaine d’actions contre le racisme” (Action Week Against Racism), which uses the theme of “Breaking barriers and living diversity.”

Created in-house, the five ads are aimed at Montrealers from five different cultural backgrounds: Italian, Asian (primarily Chinese), Latino (primarily Venezuelan and Colombian), African and Middle Eastern. The ads debuted Friday at Montreal’s Berri-UQAM Metro station, while business-card sized cards were also distributed.

Each ad features an image of a parent and child from those particular groups, accompanied by a message reading “Je soutiens mon fils gai parce qu’il est mon enfant” (“I support my gay son because he’s my child”) or “Je soutiens ma fille lesbienne parce qu’elle est mon enfant” (“I support my lesbian daughter because she’s my child”).

“The message is no matter what happens, at the end of the day it’s still your child,” said Clélia Dangué, program organizer for Fondation Émergence.
