Motorola is heading to the doghouse to launch a new earth-friendly handset. The Moto w233 Renew, made from recycled water bottles, will be available exclusively in Canada from Fido.

“We wanted to give environmentally conscious Canadian consumers an eco-friendly choice when it comes to selecting a wireless device,” said Sylvain Roy, senior vice-president and general manager, Fido. “The Moto w233 Renew is an innovative, eco-friendly device at a budget-friendly price point, which makes it a perfect fit for Fido.”

The plastic phone casing is made from recycled five-gallon water bottles, and has up to nine hours of talk time. The phone packaging and accompanying instructional material is printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper. Also included in the box is a prepaid shipping envelope for customers to use to recycle their old device.

Through an alliance with CarbonFund.org, Motorola offsets the carbon dioxide required to manufacture, distribute and operate the phone through investments in renewable energy sources and reforestation.

“The Moto w233 Renew is a highlight of Motorola’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and the environment,” said Bill Olson, director, office of sustainability and stewardship, mobile devices, Motorola, in a release. “We’re thrilled to offer Canadians the chance to put the environment first when making a mobile phone purchase. Renew is a phone that’s been designed from the ground up to be environmentally friendly.”

Fido is supporting the launch through in-store displays showcases, and online at Fido.ca.

In addition, Fido and Motorola will be showcasing the Renew at the Green Living Show in Toronto later this month. Visitors to the booth will have the chance to buy the phone with special offers.
