Sympatico.ca announced this week that it is working with Toronto-based startup Wishabi on a new digital flyer function for its web portal.

With this new collaboration, Sympatico will create original online content with retailers’ flyers showcasing products from a variety of retail sectors. Wishabi provides the technical platform to deliver that content in a shareable way.

Sympatico is highlighting various retailers’ promotions through its Flyer of the Week program (which launched Wednesday after a soft launch in April), as well as through weekly blog posts that feature the top deals in Canada every Friday.

Ben Kelly, associate director of business development at Sympatico, said more than that 85% of Canadians engage in online shopping and that the Wishabi partnership represents a way for Sympatico to enter that shopping space.

“Digital flyer distribution talks to that consumer in a much different way,” Kelly said. “The advantage of our portal is that it provides a portable environment across online, mobile and tablet devices.

“The 18-to-35 age group represents a growth opportunity in the flyer space,” he said. Because the flyers are now searchable through a variety of filters, and because content can be shared through various social media, “it does a better job of engaging the younger demographic than print flyers ever could.”

Sympatico.ca gets more than 8 million unique visitors each month.

Kelly noted that the Friday blog posts have already generated tremendous reaction. “The spikes in traffic on those days are tremendous.”
