Teletoon Retro wants viewers to think back to simpler times… times when a plump cartoon pig or feisty woodpecker really got a chuckle.
The specialty channel, which is devoted to classic cartoons and delivered to more than eight million homes in Canada, has just launched an online contest that asks viewers to vote on their all-time favourite cartoon animals. There’s a list of 30 classic critters – from Bugs Bunny to Yogi Bear to Bullwinkle – from which to choose.
The votes will be used to determine the ‘Top 5 Awesome Animals,’ which will be revealed on August 5. Then, on August 7, a programming marathon featuring those animals will air on Teletoon Retro for a three-hour block in the afternoon.
Subsequently, the top 5 will be inducted into the Teletoon Retro Hall of Fame. Viewers are able to vote on the channel’s website until August 1.
The Teletoon Retro Hall of Fame Top 5 Awesome Animals campaign runs in English on Teletoon Retro. Its counterpart, Télétoon Rétro, will run the campaign in French and provide a separate list of Télétoon Rétro cartoon animal nominees.
As part of the campaign, Teletoon Retro will hold themed weekend events at two Canadian zoos to help build buzz. Over the first weekend of July, famous cartoon mascots will visit Granby Zoo in Quebec so visitors can have pictures snapped with them. The same thing will happen the second weekend of July at the Toronto Zoo.
Also, Rogers, Shaw Cable, Shaw Direct, Telus and Videotron digital TV subscribers will receive a free preview of Teletoon Retro through July. Rogers On Demand Online will also feature selected programing.
Teletoon Retro and Télétoon Rétro are run by Teletoon Canada, which also has two other nationwide specialty channels: Teletoon and Télétoon. Teletoon Canada is owned equally by Astral and Corus Entertainment.
