To promote its new Telus Fibre high-speed internet in Alberta and B.C., Telus is touring both provinces with a concept home designed to demonstrate what a connected lifestyle looks like.
The experience starts at the front door, which unlocks for its owner after scanning their facial features to identify them. Inside, the 560-sq. ft. condo features a 78″ ultra-HD Samsung curved TV entertainment system, connected thermostats and lighting that can be controlled from your tablet, and a smart cooktop that walks the user through a recipe and can calculate the nutritional value of each meal.
Telus director of marketing Andy Balser said the experience is designed to show customers that by signing up for fibre-optic internet, they’re not just getting a faster connection, they’re “future-proofing” their homes for the fast-approaching takeover of connected devices.
“There are the immediate benefits of Fibre — faster internet, best TV experience, all that good stuff — but it also brings what we call generational change,” he explained. “The Future Home is really intended to bring some of that to life. What is the future going to hold that Fibre is going to enable down the road?”
He said the experience combined several technologies that are just being made available with some that are expected to come online in the next three to five years.
The Future Home, whose design was led by Toronto-based agency Behaviour, debuted in Drayton Valley, AB at the end of September and will make its way through eight communities in Alberta and B.C. by the end of the year. Telus Fibre is now live in 60 communities across the two provinces.
Visitors can sign up for a contest to win a Samsung prize pack featuring a 55″ ultra-HD TV, Galaxy Tab 6, and a Galaxy S6 edge. Samsung partnered with Telus to provide much of the underlying technology for the project.
