The 10 most-watched YouTube ads of 2014

TD, Budweiser and Dove round out the list

The most watched ad on YouTube this year? In Canada, it was TD’s “Sometimes you just want to say thank you” spot; part of the bank’s over-arching effort this year to give back to its customers.

While many international ads round out Google’s list of the top 10 most-watched ads on YouTube, the Canadian-made spot (by Diamond Integrated Marketing, Leo Burnett and H+K Strategies) takes the number one spot.

What does the list say about advertising? For one, transplanting a 30-second ad from TV isn’t what resonates with Canadians online. The average length of a video on the top ten is a whopping 2:39. Google identified several other takeaways based on how the ads placed, including:

  • Challenging social norms can make for powerful marketing (Always “Like A girl”)
  • Storytelling sequels can work (Evian‘s “Spider-Man: The Amazing Baby & Me 2” made the top 10)
  • Partners help with distribution (Buzzfeed and Purina).
