Tim Hortons is aiming to speed up service with the launch of a mobile payment option.
Canadian and U.S. Blackberry 10 users can register a Tim Card on the TimmyMe mobile app, then tap their devices on near field communications (NFC)-enabled terminals to pay.
The BlackBerry app uses NFC technology and works similarly to the tap-to-pay method used with some debit and credit cards. Tim Hortons says all stores are now offering BlackBerry payments.
The apps for Apple devices running iOS 6.0 or later and Android devices running version 4.0 or later use barcode scanning technology. So far, there are 11 municipalities in Ontario’s Niagara region that have stores setup for these payments.
“We’re always looking to provide our Tim Hortons guests with the best overall customer experience, and mobile payment is one area that we feel can help streamline the average time spent at the order counter,” said David Clanachan, chief operating officer, Tim Hortons, in a release.
Tim Hortons is supporting the soft launch with PR, social media and digital marketing. In-store support will commence in January to coincide with the barcode rollout. There are also plans to introduce special offers and a contest in 2014.
A North American rollout is slated to begin early in the first quarter of 2014.
