Groupon is the best-known daily deal website in Canada, according to a recent survey conducted by market research firm Synovate Canada.

Groupon topped competitors, including Kijiji and WagJag, in a survey that also found seven in 10 Canadian adults were aware of at least one daily deal site. Synovate reports that roughly one-third of respondents who were aware of such sites had actually made a purchase, with food and drink emerging as the top purchasing category.

Methodology: Synovate’s online omnibus survey eNation polled 1,012 Canadian adults (aged 18 and older) between August 18-22, 2011.

Key findings:
• 70% of Canadian adults have heard of at least one daily group-buying deal website. Ontario residents demonstrated the highest awareness, Quebecers the lowest
• 50% of Canadian adults have heard of Groupon, compared to 31% for Kijiji Daily Deals, 25% for WagJag and 20% for RedFlagDeals
• 18% of respondents who were aware of at least one daily deal site have made a purchase at Groupon
• 44% of those who had made a daily deal purchase did so in the food and drink category. Beauty and spa (21%), sports and recreation (16%) and arts and entertainment (15%) were the next most popular purchase categories
• Purchasers of online group deals average two such purchases per month
• Men and women were equally likely to be aware of daily deal sites
