Cannes 2016: Seven Canadian agencies shortlisted in Design

JWT Canada Leo Burnett Toronto and LG2 lead the pack

PRESENTED_BY_AOLJ. Walter Thompson Canada Toronto has multiple chances of winning a Cannes Lion for its work for Toronto PFLAG.

The agency’s poster series for the organization landed on the Design shortlist at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity on Monday, with four nods for various executions.

The posters hung in Toronto high schools earlier this year and were designed to spread a message of inclusivity. The ads feature the LGBTQ flag marked with a series of words signifying sexual orientations and gender identities, such as “lesbian,” “trans,” and “two-spirited.” When lit with a camera flash, the posters displayed a signifying word such as “partner,” “teammate” or “ally.”

This is the second year in a row J. Walter Thompson Canada has landed on a Cannes shortlist for its work for PFLAG. In 2015, the agency earned a shortlist nod in the first Creative Data Lions competition for its Twitter-enabled Pride flag.

In total, 13 Canadian entries made the list for seven agencies. Leo Burnett Toronto, LG2 and DDB each earned two shortlist nominations apiece.

Leo Burnett was shortlisted for its work for Printed By Somerset, earning nods both for Website Design and Refresh of an existing brand.

LG2 was shortlisted twice for its work for Parc Olympique’s 40th anniversary. The agency was recognized both for the anniversary logo and the creation of the anniversary brand identity.

DDB’s “Non-stop annual report” for Edmonton International Airport was nominated in Annual Reports & Other Corporate Communications and in Illustration: Print & Editorial.

Also earning nods:

  • Sid Lee Toronto for Toronto Raptors rebrand/refresh
  • Cossette Montreal “Happy Moving Day” for McDonald’s Canada
  • Zulu Alpha Kilo for “Say no to spec”

The shortlist for the Product Design competition was also released Monday morning, but no Canadian entries are on it.

Product Design is a relatively new competition in Cannes. It was launched in 2014 and has seen a quick rise in the number of competing entries, jumping from 194 in 2014 to 280 last year and 538 for 2016.

The Product Design Lions will be handed out during a gala awards ceremony Tuesday.
