Social giant releases annual ranking of most-discussed topics and personalities

Year in Review 2015 ImageA ginger-haired entertainer was among the most talked-about personalities on Facebook this year, and no it wasn’t Donald Trump.

Singer Ed Sheeran topped the list of most talked-about entertainers on Facebook in 2015, according to the social media site’s year-end review, ranking ahead of Taylor Swift, Kanye West, reggaeton star Nicky Jam and Wiz Khalifa.

Trump’s daily antics no doubt helped the U.S. presidential election become the most discussed topic globally, ahead of the Nov. 13 terrorist attacks in Paris, the Syrian civil war and refugee crisis, the Nepal earthquakes and the Greek debt crisis.

In Canada, the 42nd federal election was the most discussed topic, ranking ahead of other social issues including the relationship with First Nations, the Paris attacks, the Syrian crisis and marriage equality.

Niagara Falls was the year’s most checked-in place, followed by Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada and Canada’s Wonderland.

Globally, Game of Thrones was the most talked about TV show for the second year in a row, placing ahead of The Walking Dead and The Daily Show. The variety show Saturday Night Live, which kicked off its 40th season in October,was the fourth most-discussed TV show.

J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars reboot Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the most talked-about movie, ahead of Fast & Furious 7 and Jurassic World.

Boxers Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao were the most talked about athletes, following their May fight. UFC star Ronda Rousey was third, followed by soccer stars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Facebook has compiled its year-end lists on a dedicated site.
