Among the most decorated printing companies in Canada, routinely recognized for both its high quality work and its environmental leadership, Hemlock Printers in Burnaby, B.C. has undergone a subtle change to its branding to reflect both progress and innovation within the company.
Updating its iconic pine tree logo and the look of its brand with a more contemporary take reflects the company’s gradual adoption of more digital and Internet-enabled processes and services to complement its established reputation as a leader in printed communications.
“New technology allows us to give our customers so much more. So it’s important that our logo and our brand reflect that future focus,” says Dick Kouwenhoven, president/CEO and founder of Hemlock Printers in a release announcing the new logo design. “Hemlock’s new look expresses technology-driven innovation in service while remaining true to our core principles of business integrity and superior print quality.”
Hemlock’s pine tree logo, in place for 18 years, reflected the early environmental awareness of the company, years ahead of any broad-reaching consumer-driven sustainability movement. Today Hemlock is one of very few commercial printing companies in Canada to offer a carbon neutral program (called Zero) allowing customers to brand their products as carbon neutral.
The new futuristic tree (a bit Star Trekie) reflects the company’s continued focus on sustainability while also emphasizing its progressive and forward thinking culture.
Moving well beyond just traditional lithographic offset commercial printing, Hemlock has an established digital printing division and has embraced online ordering services for its customers as well as working with customers on integrating print and online marketing activities.
“Innovation is the key,” notes Kouwenhoven. “In recent times many companies and industries have focused on maintaining the status quo and driving down the cost. But at Hemlock the solution to changing times is to foster innovation – it is so important in a company, in an industry and in a society.”
