Although recognized internationally in the past for its award-winning offset printing quality, Hemlock Printers of Burnaby, B.C. (a past winner of Sappi’s International Printer of the Year) claimed a gold award in the digital category in this year’s Sappi North American Printers of the Year competition.

Hemlock was awarded the top prize in the digital category for the Peter Schafrick Portfolio, a collection of work by the commercial still life photographer who shoots in Toronto, New York and Germany.

The only other Canadian printer to win a gold this year was Blanchette Press of Richmond, B.C. (another multi-award-winning shop) claiming top honours in the general category for a piece done for the Great Western Brewing Co. of Saskatoon—a collection promoting the craft brewing company’s new Original 16 Pale Ale premium brand.

Sappi’s Printers of the Year awards recognize print excellence and innovation produced exclusively on Sappi papers in 10 categories of work (annual reports, books, brochures, calendars, catalogues, digital, general print, magazines – web, magazines – sheetfed, and printer’s own promotion). The entries are judged on overall impact, degree of difficulty in printing techniques and technical excellence.

The 10 gold winners of the North American competition emerged from a field of approximately 2,100 entries.

Each of the gold winning printers will receive $20,000 to support marketing and brand initiatives as well as entry into the competition for Sappi’s International Printers of the Year 2012 awards, where the companies will be competing against winners from Africa, Europe and the Sappi Trading Region (Asia, Australia, Central America and South America) for world-wide prestige.
