Bringing together the best of two worlds—craft-based letterpress printing and new-age touch-based iPad technology—an all new iPad app has just launched called LetterMpress.
The new app is dedicated to keeping the art of working with traditional letterpress wood type alive while also giving users a unique experience where they can interactively learn classic printing techniques.
The new LetterMpress app, priced at US$5.99, allows users to actually design using type and then print, share or e-mail their letterpress-inspired digital creations.
The app takes users through the traditional letterpress printing process, from selecting and assembling type, fixing it in place, mixing colours, selecting paper and then hand-cranking a virtual letterpress.
LetterMpress includes 13 typefaces and dozens of art cuts—a typecase that will be expanded as the app gets updated.
LetterMpress was developed by mpressInteractive LLC, a company founded by graphic designer John Bonadies and developer Jeff Adams. It’s their first mobile app. The company also offers letterpress printing services on vintage presses, printing classes and workshops at its Living Letter Press studio in Champaign, Illinois.
The launch of the new app is being sponsored by Neenah Paper.
