The Sponsorship Marketing Council of Canada (SMCC) has appointed its 2015 board of directors, which will be lead by board chair Tyler Mazereeuw, senior director of business development for the Canadian Football League.
Mazereeuw has been a member of the SMCC board since 2011, the same year he joined the CFL. As an SMCC member, he has participated as a judge, course instructor, event speaker, and head of the Education Committee. He takes over as chair from Dan MacKenzie, GM of NBA Canada, who steered the board since 2013.
Before joining the CFL, Mazereeuw directed corporate partnerships at IMG Canada, the Grand Prix Association of Toronto, and Molson Sports & Entertainment. He’s also worked as a sponsorship and advertising coordinator for TIFF and an account executive for Arts & Communications.
In a statement, Mazeereuw said he planned to grow SMCC’s profile in the greater marketing and academic communities, expand the organization into Quebec and Eastern Canada, and work with a dozen top Canadian businesses and organizations to launch a new founding partnership program.
“Sponsorships are sometimes seen as a small subset of traditional marketing, but over the last few years the SMCC has proven the value of sponsorships in our ever-evolving media landscape,” he said. “In 2015 we’re going to push ourselves even further and ensure we continue to showcase the important role sponsorships play in communicating to and engaging consumers.”
Under previous chair MacKenzie, the organization added two new chapters in Vancouver and Calgary, created a monthly educational breakfast forum, and rebranded with a new logo and website. In 2014 its membership grew to more than 100 organizations and 600 industry professionals.
